Christmas 2017: In Photos

December 25th has come and gone, but the Christmas spirit is living on in full around here.

Just the way I like it.

I have quite a review coming at you this weekend as I’ve been gently reviewing my year, but I just couldn’t let the week go past without giving Christmas it’s own time in the spot light. Since my upcoming post will be quite heavy on the words, this review will be coming at you photo dump style.  I actually didn’t take many pictures while I was home as I was too busy spending off-screen time with others (cough baby time cough), but I grabbed enough to give you a little replay of some memories

So here we go

Christmas 2017: in few words or less

Giving gifts to others

homemade cards

little gift packages for friends

Christmas 2017

homemade beauty products

Christmas 2017

baking baking baking

I made Kat’s Gingerbread Quinoa Chocolate Bark, but after realizing I actually didn’t have enough quinoa, I substituted a mixture of dry quinoa, dry millet, dry buckwheat groats, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds to make it more of a “granola” bark. I swear to you when I had my first bite I literally said…out lout..to myself… “I think this is the best thing I’ve ever made.”

giving books to others

Some serious relaxation time at home

Christmas 2017

many morning mugs of coffee with my family

Christmas 2017

The -38 degree (celsius) weather may not have been a favorite, but the views remain spectacular

Christmas 2017

Christmas 2017

simple lunches at home with homemade soup and crackers and cheese

Receiving wonderful gifts from those who know me all too well

Christmas 2017

words of wisdom

Christmas 2017

For years now my Mom has a tradition of giving me a “12 days of Christmas” box of gifts. This way I get to live on in the Christmas spirit for days after. It’s my favorite thing. My mom is the best.

Meals enjoyed together around a big table

Christmas 2017

Christmas morning wifesaver and croissants: my favorite meal of the year

Christmas 2017

the plates of fruit

A new title

Christmas 2017

“Aunt” est 2017. That’s me 🙂 🙂

Christmas 2017

the new love of my life

The not so favorite part of leaving…

Christmas 2017

a beautiful sunrise after a 3 am wake up call and 5 am flight to return to my own little home…

Christmas 2017

…where the worlds’ best cinnamon bun and a massive mug of coffee helped ease me back

….but still a joy in my heart as this is only goodbye for a short few days. I am being absolutely spoiled as – thanks to air points – both Dan and I will be flying to St. John’s Newfoundland, along with the rest of my family, to spend New Years with my other brother and sister in law who did not make it home for Christmas. My brother and his wife, my other brother and his wife AND my niece, my two parents, Dan and I all together in one roof…. literally nothing could be better.

This Christmas was the most relaxing of any holiday I’ve spent at home. This year, I allowed myself to fully relax. I napped. I didn’t leave the house unless I absolutely had to. I didn’t exercise. I ate when others ate. I focused on my “rocks” when the uncomfortable feelings came.

My heart is full.

I have to say you make the BEST homemade and foodie gifts. Your friends and family are so lucky to have you! What a beautiful reflection of your time home. “Auntie” looks good on you! How was it having a baby in the house for the holidays? That will be our big adjustment next year. And how fun to be traveling to St. Johns for New Year’s to see the rest of your family. I hope you get even more time to relax!

Having a baby in the house was the most grounding, soothing, therapeutic thing I could have ever imagined. One little hold and all your stress just goes away.

      (until she starts crying….)

The whole vacation was complete relaxation. Thanks Sarah

What a great way to spend Christmas. Good food, leisurely mornings, beautiful surroundings, family around you, and a new little darling to cuddle and love. Thanks for sharing the pictures. I love your creative and thoughtful approach to gifting. Enjoy Christmas, Part II, on the Rock!

    • Cora | 3rd Jan 18

Just wish you could have been there to complete the family

I LOVE the relaxing parts of Christmas; this year was probably the most relaxing Christmas we’ve celebrated too; it was so amazing to just soak in the peace that Jesus came to bring between God and man. I LOVE the goodies and the warm soup; we just had chili last night and Chinese, and it still feels like Christmas is going strong here. And I really love all your homemade gifts Cora; they’re just so pretty; and they have that homemade touch that can’t be matched. :)) Hope you have a LOVELY New Year’s with your sweet family.

We just had a couple days full of Chinese food and homemade soup. And lots and LOTS of relaxing. It’s pretty great, isn’t it?

  4. Susie @ Suzlyfe | 29th Dec 17

I am going to infiltrate your family gatherings next time. I haven’t done handmade gifts in too long, but I think that will need to change next year. Or I will just Amazon things again because I have an 11ish month old. LOL

What a beautiful reflection – and a beautiful holiday! Some of my favorite moments were diving into some gf and vegan cinnamon rolls and going on a family walk to look at Christmas decorations.

how amazing!!! I have been learning so much about Hygge because my darling brother’s girlfriend is Danish, and he is practically Danish now through her and her family. they actually plan on moving back to Denmark in the next couple of years… I’m so jealous but ridiculously happy for them 🙂
Nicholas, my brother, has been visiting us for the holidays – he arrived on 12/19 and returns back to Aberdeen on 1/9/18.. i have been enjoying this time because he happens to be the worlds’ best Uncle and loves to play with Lulu. we had a great Christmas and have been doing family things each evening after I get home from work. Last night we saw the new Star Wars movie and I can honestly say it was the best one I’ve seen so far.. highly recommend.
I’m not looking forward to Nicholas returning but I’m trying my best to enjoy each moment that he’s here. Your new title of Aunt suits you and your little niece is simply adorable!
Happiest of holidays to you and wishing you the most magical, marvelous, glittery 2018 <3

    • Cora | 3rd Jan 18

Sigh. The goodbye part of being with family is never easy. I’m so glad you’ve had some good relaxing time with your brother – he sounds like a gem.

Hygge is becoming a major word for me this year. I just want everything I do to be aligned with creating hygge in my home, my life, my mind.

We all went to see Star Wars the other night, and yes, Dan actually said it was the best out of all the Star Wars movies (he hasn’t been a fan of a lot of them and almost didn’t come). I only slept through a brief part of it – ha.

    • Cora | 3rd Jan 18

Relaxing truly was the name of the game this year – I’m glad you also enjoyed this.

Yeah….. I figure once it gets to -30 (celsius) there really is no difference in anything worse. Its just a matter of surviving…

      Thanks Joyce 🙂

She seriously made it a Christmas like never before. You couldn’t help but feel relaxed and happy.

  12. Kaylee | 2nd Jan 18

Homemade everything! You are a superstar Cora. I’m sure you friends and family loved all the gifts. If I ever have kids, I will definitely be enacting that 12 days of Christmas tradition of your mom! What a geat idea.

Also, have you read the hygge book already? It’s on my to-read list and want to know if it’s worth the hype.

Belated Merry Christmas!! Like you, one of my favorite parts was getting to relax–sleeping in, playing board games, singing holiday songs, doing absolutely nothing at times. Even with the stress of last minute shopping and wrapping all the gifts ever wasn’t a terrible kind of stress.

    • Cora | 3rd Jan 18

Me too – I would love to create the 12 days of giveaway for my daughter. Doesn’t even have to be big. Just these little tid bits to open each day is the best.

I haven’t read the Hygge book in full, no, but have read a number of pages and excerpts. I think its lovely for a little comforting happy-inducing read. Just little reminders for – “oh yeah, I am going to do this because it makes me feel happy, and that’s okay.”

  13. Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets | 7th Jan 18

What a difference a year or two makes huh? Remember when being home was such a source of stress and now you’re happiness is just leaping off the page.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Love.

PS. That baby is freakin’ adorable.

….right? It was a couple years ago when you were the one that gently suggested I try to get home more often so that it starts to get easier. It’s pretty amazing to think how a few years ago when I was home, I was itching to get back to my own space, and this year I didn’t want to leave. I felt so at peace. <3

  14. chasetheredgrape | 7th Jan 18

Full hearts… That’s what christmas should be.
What a wonderful festive time, your handmade gifts and cards look amazing and I’m sure meant the world to those who received them. I saw you gave the little book of hygge, did you get the chance to read it yourself? I loved it… As you well know! Haha!
And to see with both had 38c… Yours in the minus. Mine in the plus. Both very hard temps to work with!!

    • Cora | 12th Jan 18

That book gift was curtesy of you!

I haven’t yet read the whole book front to back, but have read a number of excerpts. Enough to know it makes you feel all warm and cozy inside. I wanted to give both my sisters-in-law something that just exuded relaxation, self love and happiness. I think they are really loving this new term they’ve just learned.

Geez louise we are at complete opposite temperature poles. That’s nuts!
