It’s Amazing What Company Can Do For Productivity: Week In Review

Goodmorning friends and welcome to a new week

This past weekend my brother and sister-in-law from Newfoundland came to stay with us. They had a show they were coming to Toronto to see and so Dan and I housed them in our new little pad for a few nights. I really love being able to have company stay with us. Figuring out how to make our pull out couch sleep-able has been its own separate frustration, but we got it figured out. Seriously, are pull out couches/hidabeds ever level?

I digress.

Not that I super care what guests think, but, having people over to your house for the the first time can be a little fire under the butt to get some of those long awaited, pesky to-do-list things checked off your list. You know – those little house maintenance and repair tasks that remain on your list years well past your move in date. I went on a short little rampage before my company arrived and got done a number of things – tiny things I’ll have you – but things that felt so damn good.

Celebrate your achievements with Meg

Pulled out the paint cans from the very back of our closet and retouched a number of cracks and stains on our walls. Of course, the more you do the more you find.

I fixed the thingy at the bottom of the door that was always falling off and driving me crazy. You know. The thingy. With the screws.

Bought a mattress pad for our pull out bed and configured a way to make it sleep-able (note: the guests still slept in our bed. We slept on said pull out couch).

Bought a set of drawers to finally put away those bathroom items that have been chilling on the floor.

Borrowed a drill and stud finder from a friend and TRIED to finally hang the shelf I was wanting to use to put my cookbooks on. Alas. Not going to happen in that wall, unfortunately, so I will have to figure out something else. At least we learned that much. And I learned what a stud finder is …..guess I could have been using that thing before now…..

I cleaned the fridge. Pulled out the panels and everything.

I swept and mopped the floors. Even gave our outside entrance area a mop, which I don’t think anyone had ever done. Ever.

Baked a batch of blueberry muffins for the extra mouths in the house. I give them a 10/10 for rise and texture – look how tall! I could have had them sweeter, but spread with peanut butter they are perfection

Gluten free blueberry (new) + chocolate bran beet (from a previous batch)

One morning, when Dan had to work, I cooked our company a breakfast spread of pancakes, fruit, turkey bacon and coffee. The next morning, Dan cooked us all a feast of toast, eggs, peameal bacon and hash browns. I told them… if its me? You get sweets and carbs. Dan? Bacon and eggs. We each have our specialities.

Oh and I – okay, well I had my brother do it – fixed my kitchen cupboard hinges so they actually close properly. Oh the little things!!

Hosting guests also help you with some “firsts”

I got ramen for the first time! Something I’ve been wanting to try for a long time. It was sooooooooo good.

This bowl was bigger than my head

We went to see a matinee showing of “I, Tonya.” I think I’ve maybe gone to a movie in the daytime once before – but I definitely never do it. It’s such a lovely thing to do! I loved the movie. Loved it. Thought it was excellent. But oh man so tragic.

Then that night we watched The Post. I think that means I get to check off the first time I’ve actually watched two whole movies in one day. I know. I’m behind. But that’s a damn good accomplishment (can you also tell I’m on a rampage to watch all the oscar movies before the awards? Doing pretty well I think).

Nearly finished off a tupperware of homemade cookies I’ve been storing in the freezer whilst watching above mentioned movie. Washed them down with a big mug of a hot chocolate mix that I pulled out for the first time.

In other news from the week:

I barely survived five shifts at the restaurant. But somehow, I did.

I was asked to help stage manage for a couple nights for a company (that I really really want to work for). I worked with the director last year and so she reached out to me when she needed an extra hand. Just being in the room with those actors…. gah I became a different person. It was so inspiring.

I worked on my script for my film class, went to class, and feel positively challenged

I had a really nice afternoon in a cafe where I just let my tired mind relax in the sun beams, and then began my job search

I sat down to organize my head around a few self tapes I’m supposed to do. I’ve been having a real hard time with time management and organization and motivation these days. Ugh. I say “ugh” because I have yet to actually configure how, or if,  I’ll get the self tapes done.

I even published three posts last week, including my recent eats catch up and a new recipe! Finally

Sesame Carrot Tempeh Bowl

What I need for myself this week:

A serious stretch out, some yoga, and time prioritized to applying for new work

Tell me,

Do you get more things accomplished when you know you will be having company?

Do you ever go to movies during the day?

If you were to cook breakfast for company – do you go sweet or savory?

Have you seen I, Tonya? What did you think?

I can only tolerate about two hours of movie at a time. After that, I start to get crabby. When people talk about binge-watching shows, I usually think, that sounds miserable! So I haven’t watched two movies in one day since I was a very little kid visiting my cousins. I can see why needing to see the movies before the Oscars changes the game, though. πŸ˜‰
Congrats on being offered the stage manager position! Woot woot! Sounds like an awesome experience and great networking too.
You sound like an amazing host!

Haha – I love the Oscar challenge I give myself each year. It really puts a fire under my butt to do something I actually love, but have a hard time giving over time to do any other time of year. I’m actually able to binge through 3 or 4 episodes of a show if I’m super into it, but yeah, I’m not exactly one to do well at sitting and watching movies all day.

  2. Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy | 5th Feb 18

Sweets + carbs + bacon + eggs is the perfect combo of sweet and savory, my faveeeee. I agree that knowing guests are coming can help kick my butt in gear for some projects I’m avoiding. I love matinee movies, but it’s been a while since I”ve been to one!

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

Well just putting this out there now…. when I get myself down to visit you, don’t you DARE do a bunch of cleaning. But, we can make some epic breafkasts. That I would be okay with πŸ™‚

  3. Alyssa | 5th Feb 18

    Isn’t ramen so amazing?
When I know people are coming over, it pushes me to get more things done during the day!
Lately when I’ve cooked breakfast for others, it’s been savory. But, I always LOVE a sweet breakfast for myself! Like oats/muffins/smoothie bowls/peanut butter toast!

Oh my gosh Lyss… ramen is SO GOOD!!

  4. Hannah | 5th Feb 18

I definitely get things that I’ve been putting off around the house done when we’re having company…but honestly, when it’s family coming sometimes they accomplish as many of my tasks as I do.

I haven’t been to a movie in years because the volume level in theaters gives me a pounding headache. I’m happy to wait and watch in the comfort of my own home….and sound preference.

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

Hahaha…. yep. Hence the brother fixing my cupboard doors…..

Theatre can be overwhelming for some, no doubt. Thank goodness for netflix and couches.

  5. Kat | 5th Feb 18

Oh my gosh I become the most productive person in the world when I know that someone is coming. 1 because I want to get stuff out of the way so that I have free time but 2 because I want to have a clean and organized house, so a visit typically motivates me to do the things I’ve been pushing off lol
And as for movies we almost ONLY go in the mornings or afternoons because its cheaper! That and I feel like there’s less of the “crazies” at those movie showings – so no crying kids, yelling fans or any other shenanigans. My hubby and I are also 28 going on 65, so we are THAT old married couple….. πŸ˜‰

Lol. Hey, but if you are still finding time to go on movie dates, then you are the COOLEST 65 year olds. I love that you go in the day time!!

  6. Emily Swanson | 5th Feb 18

I sometimes do love going to the movies in the middle of the day, because there’s less people there, and like Kat said, it’s definitely cheaper! And I love how having company does light that fire to help me get things done, and focus on what really needs to get done.

And those AMAZING BLUEBERRY MUFFINS; they’re so tall, I want a bite.

The muffins were really good…. but definitely needed peanut butter. As do most things πŸ™‚

I wish movies were cheaper during the day here!! Our only cheap time is Tuesday nights.

  7. Jamie@TheMomGene | 5th Feb 18

I want to be a guest in your house!!! I would bring wine and baked goods. I promise. P.S. Hiw was β€œThe Post”?

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

      Get your butt over here.

Can’t promise it’ll still be clean…. but we can fix that with cookies and wine.

The post was excellent. I have to admit, I fell asleep a bit (NOTHING to do with the movie… it was my second in a day + I sleep in everything….shhhh), so I can’t give it a full detailed review. But from what I did see it was superb, and the rest of my clan loved it.

  8. Kristy from Southern In Law | 6th Feb 18

Haha, yes! Having company over does light that fire under your butt, haha!!

We always tend to go for savoury breakfasts when we have company as that’s what Jesse prefers but if I have my way, it’s sweet breakfasts all the way!!

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

      Haha…. sounds very familiar!

  9. Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table | 6th Feb 18

I love having company over for that very reason! It really lights a fire under you.

Did you love The Post??? It was so reflective of the current situation… history does repeat! I need to check out I, Tonya.

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

Oh definitely see I. Tonya. I have a feeling you would love it!

  10. Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets | 6th Feb 18

It’s amazing what a few house guests will inspire you to do around the house. I so badly need to touch up paint some walls, but it probably won’t happen for quite some time. I’m OK with that, or maybe I should invite some company over. πŸ™‚

Your week was jam packed between all those shifts, hosting and watching all the movies. I want to see The Post badly. Soon.

Good luck squeezing in the yoga this week.

When I visit I’ll help you touch up those walls, deal? Painting party, complete with wine and cookies. Just promise me you won’t do a bunch of cleaning before I arrive.

I got some yoga in…. did you?

  11. Heather @ Polyglot Jot | 7th Feb 18

OMG I’ve been tellign you to eat ramen hahah yesssssss! I wish I could make you my homemade batch! It’s one of my winter staples. Cleaning the fridge is one of my least favorite things to do…I put it off because I’m always amazed at how gross the fridge can get…like what the heck?!

Haha yes you have!!! And I finally did!! Do you have a recipe for a homemade batch!? I’d love to find a way to make it at home.

  12. Nicole @ Laughing My Abs Off | 7th Feb 18

Eyyy good for you being so productive! I REALLY need to get my butt in gear about applying to summer jobs, but goodness I have so much schoolwork and then when I’m not doing that I want to work on the blog or hang out with friends or SLEEP, and so it always gets pushed to the wayside. But it has to get done, of course.
And definitely sweet breakfasts for MY guests πŸ˜‰ My famous banana oatmeal or pancakes are the usual classics.

this post seriously gave me mega uber feels! i love it. i love that you and Dan cooked your own spin on breakfasts. i love talking about hosting. i love day movies and daytime dates. i love muffins…
i have to say that i sometimes want a really sweet breakfast on the weekends but during the week i want nothing but water and then something protein-y much later. i guess it depends on my mood, duh πŸ˜€
you are spot on about hosting and having people over, and how it creates a sense of urgency to suddenly make everything nice and neat. for example, last night my husband had a mate come over to work in his office at home. after dinner he disappeared and next thing i knew, our home office was tidier than i’ve EVER seenit before!!! if only he could do that everywhere πŸ˜€
you know how much i loved i Tonya!!! i really loved it and it made me so emo. i was in a really funky place after the movie because my heart was torn to pieces for this amazing person i misjudged so many decades ago. i felt sad for her and guilty, and also mesmerized by the movie itself. i had SO many emotions!!! but most of all i wanted to watch old Tonya Harding videos πŸ™‚

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

Hahah! Maybe you should trick him by saying you are having company over more often…. then, “oops, guess they had to cancel.” You’d be living in constant cleanliness!

Your thoughts on I, Tonya… mine exactly. I went home and immediately watched an hours worth of old skating routines and interviews with her or about her.

  14. chasetheredgrape | 7th Feb 18

Oh my goodness when we have company that’s usually when everything gets done! And I mean everything. Even though I know there is no way they will be looking in my wardrobe and drawers, I still clean them and sort them. Always a crazy time. Same with our rental inspections, in fact we had one today so the past few days have been cleaning like mad (which is insane because it wasn’t that dirty to begin with!). But now it’s over, we get to live in a tidy and clean apartment, so I guess it’s a win!

    • Cora | 11th Feb 18

Haha! Well, whatever it is that gets you to do some sorting and purging…. must feel so good after!

  15. Kaylee | 10th Feb 18

You weren’t kidding about getting a lot done this week! My goodness! All those home projects. Especially deep cleaning the fridge. I know that’s something I love to avoid πŸ™‚
And despite all that you were still able to do fun things! 2 award-nominated movies, ramen, cookie eating. I really wanna see I, Tonya! And The Post!
Hope you’re taking time to slow down too!

It was a filled week that’s for sure! I love that I got so much done but also watched movies and had a couple days of relaxation. Feels good when you look back and realize that you actually get more done and feel best when you have a balance of both.
