Week In Review: Soothe the Soul

Goodmorning my friends,

Are you having nice weather where you are? After a couple weeks of the most annoying on-and-off rain and cloud, we are finally getting some steady heat and sun. Knock on all the wood. It really helps the soul.

As always, I’m linking up with wonderful Meg to help me see the accomplishments I made last week.

Last week I…

Bought a dress for my brother’s wedding. I fly home next week to be a bridesmaid. If you didn’t know, shopping for clothes is definitely in my top three least favorite activities. I told myself I could just go in and out of the mall, try on one or two and grab whatever I thought would work. All I needed was something navy blue. And hey, I found one. Atleast, it’ll do.

Does this look like a girl who loves time in dressing rooms….??

I visited a friend at his house who’s going through a rough time. We had a good catch up.

I did a lot of research, work, and brainstorming for my second class of the film workshop I am doing. This included watching a lot of shows that, as a Canadian actor, I should really be familiar with. Felt good to do this. This also included a lot of very frustrating time with video editing programs. That part didn’t feel quite as good.

But scones always help…

Had my second class. Which was extremely helpful and also very hard on the ego.

I finally got around to experimenting with something I had had in my cupboard for almost a year now. Geez louise. I think I’ve even got something to share with you guys very soon. It’s been too long.

soothe the soul

I went to the most wonderful physical theatre workshop with a director I know who invited me to come for free. I maneuvered my work shifts to be able to go. It was so beautiful and so necessary for the soul.

I spent some time reflecting in Queen’s Park

I worked 5 shifts at the restaurant

I spent some good time with my Fringe script

I responded to comments

And published a WIAW/Day In the Life post, as well as a post about your Stimulation Sweet Spot

I checked off a dentist appointment and saw my chiropractor, who really fixed up some hip discomfort I’ve been having

I made a couple homemade breakfasts at home. Meaning, I spent more than 3 minutes making up a nice plate for myself. It had been a while.

soothe the soul

Egg/cheese/peameal breakfast sandwich + green juice + coffee

In that green juice was kale, spinach, chard, ginger, lemon, cayenne. Mmmm.

More cheese please

soothe the soul

Blueberry pancakes + sea of peanut butter and yogurt

I saw a show that some friends of mine were in

And then I came home and drowned some sorrows in bed with a bowl of apple crisp, ice cream and a bag of chocolate covered cranberries. I caught myseful up on open tabs, frivolous recipe searching and tv watching. And sleep.

What a sweet sweet week. <3 I don't like clothes shopping either; I think my mom and sister are better at choosing clothes for me than I am; I'm so thankful God put them into my life. It's amazing how He brought us all together.

And last week one of the most soul soothing things was laying on the beach. I'm not a huge beach gal, but I just loved it this time. Also, skipping a day I normally would've worked out was actually really soothing. My body and mind needed it.

That bread you made looks SO GOOD. πŸ™‚ Looking forward to the recipe.

My mom is definitely way better at finding me clothes than I am. I’m very thankful that she apparently likes doing it.
Ahhhhh the beach. How lovely that you got out there to relax!! Also very glad you took a *complete* day to rest. Hope you feel proud of that. We absolutely need them to recharge and keep doing what we want to do.

Those pancakes with the drippy peanut butter and yogurt.. I want! Also, that outdoor cafe looks adorable. Perfect spot for having a coffee and scone, and enjoying the outdoors. I don’t like shopping, but once I’m there, I always get more than I need.

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

It is a perfect little spot. You’d love it. And you’d definitely love all their scones, too.

I soothe my soul with time with Alex and a call to my mom while walking my dog in the sunshine. It was a great past 7 days for that. I think sunshine is my greatest life balm.

Yep that sounds like pretty much the perfect gift for the soul. Time with those who get us will always be the most powerful soother. Sun is a close second.

Your week was intense. You are definitely kicking ass on managing yourself as a business and I’m so impressed with your work ethic and your ability to sneak in some self care. Hello chiropractor. Also, I love getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist. Weird, but true.

I soothe my soul by vegging out at night, working in my planner, and sneaking in kitty snuggles. Oscar is in my lap at this very moment. πŸ™‚

Hmm. I’m definitely not a fan of the dentist. But I can appreciate the satisfaction of leaving with pearly whites. Not to mention – you get a recliner and a TV remote. In your life I would say that would be very welcome. Maybe you could bring Oscar?

That breakfast sandwich looks dreamy ? I soothed my soul with a Saturday morning at the farmer’s market. You’ll love this: we bought herbed goat cheese that is HEAVEN and ate mango popsicles while listening to the hipster soloist play some tunes on his guitar. ☺️

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Gahhh SWOOOOOOOON that has me ALL over it. I need a hipster to serenade me. And a popsicle.

  6. Evangeline | 12th Jun 17

I’m scheming on those pancakes. They look beautifully fluffy. Shopping for clothes is frustrating. The combination of leaving the house, and spending money, and looking at sizes, and critiquing my body in a giant mirror usually doesn’t result in a happy, contented feelings. On the bright side, you did do it! And the dress looks cute. Catching up with friends, especially when you can be there for a friend, definitely soothes the soul. Apple crisp and watching TV in your pjs work too though.

Ugh. Everything. Just everything about it I do not like. You have to drag your bag around with you… keep taking all your clothes and shoes on and off…. then if you buy anything you have even more bags… and the people.. and…

  7. Juli@1000lovelythings | 12th Jun 17

I always wonder if your week miraculously has more hours than mine. Because you always fit in so many things! How are you doing this?
Urgh you just reminded me that I need to get a new dress for a wedding I have to attend in July. No color scheme I have to follow yet still bad enough πŸ˜› I hate shopping dressy clothes.

Oooooo I’m sorry for that reminder. Though maybe now you’ll do better than me and not leave it until the last minute? Just make sure you have a bottle of wine waiting for you at home.

  8. Heather | 12th Jun 17

Ugh, I’m with you on dressing rooms and shopping for clothes. Many times I will just bring a couple options home with me, try them on there and then return what doesn’t work. I love clothing so much, but really hate shopping for it. Haha!

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Oh man. That is such a good idea. I’m pretty sure I’ve done that a couple times where I “think” something will fit and just say “I’ll try it at home.” I’d rather take the risk of having to take it back then sometimes getting in another dressing room.

  9. Kat | 12th Jun 17

I hate shopping too. Well, I sort of like it – I like the idea of it [new, cute clothes] but not the process. My body just doesn’t fit in the certain “styles” they have out nowadays! I bet you are going to look gorgeous in that dress though! <3
I'm glad you were able to be there for your friend. We all need that sometimes – to both be comforted and be the comforter. I find that there are benefits to both sides!

Oh there are definitely benefits to both sides!! Sometimes of course you need to be the one talking about being comforted, but I often find being the comforter to be really grounded and comforting to me as well.

  11. Hannah | 12th Jun 17

Oh, your homemade breakfasts look lovely. And remind me that I need to make some of my own…definitely soul-soothing. As is reading.

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Yeah. I need to add more book reading to this list.

  12. Lauren | 12th Jun 17

I hate clothes shopping too, that’s why if I find an item I like, I buy more than one of it (and if possible in different colours) to save me the angst of going through change room hell all over again. As for soul soothing, it’s painting, reading and hydrotherapy for me right now. And I hate to admit this but working is also good at taking my mind away from my pain. I’m so jealous of your chocolate covered cranberries hit, dried cranberries are one of my ultimate favourite snack foods. Very more-ish!

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Ahhhh you are a smart lady!
Hydrotherapy? I will have to look this up. I don’t think I’ve heard of it.
Work can be a distraction which is sometimes the type of soothing we need for the short term. As long as you come home to some chocolate covered cranberries πŸ™‚

At least you get to choose your own bridesmaid dress! They’re usually god-awful and expensive. Id’ rasther not be in weddings. Shhhh…

Sou soothing to be is baking. There’s something about it that’s so relaxing!

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Blegh I’ve only been in two wedding and each time I got to choose my own dress. Thank GOD.

  15. Lyss | 13th Jun 17

I love online shopping over regular in store shopping lol. It’s so much easier and fun!
I feel like we are so similar too in the ways we just love to relax and live life hehe. My favorite way to soothe my soul is going to a coffee shop or sitting on my hammock with a cold drink and a good book in my hand. πŸ™‚

  16. danielle | 13th Jun 17

oh my stars all that food looks divine considering i’m pretty hungry right now. our house hold has been battling major bugs and colds and all sorts of yuck the last few weeks so the things that have soothed my soul have been rest.. and walks or jogs outside to shake out this funk. fresh air is what i crave when i’m feeling so helpless, and being sick makes me feel helpless.
and hot, hot baths… ahhh. i just started dry brushing again and i must say, i don’t know why i stopped. i adore it. i’m going to continue because it makes me feel better despite the crud πŸ™‚ do you brush? i use to do the coconut oil oral swishing as well, so maybe i’ll add that in again… later!

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Bllllegh I hope the bug has left you all alone by now!! I’ve been craving a morning outdoor walk these past few days. I hadn’t even realized its been so so so long since I went on one. I used to go on them all the time. I think my body really needs some fresh air and easy intuitive movement.
I think I used to know what dry brushing is but now I have to look it up again. So no, I do not, haha, but now you’ve got me all curious. The coconut oral swish has always super irked me out though. I don’t think I could ever get on that one…

  17. Miss Polkadot | 14th Jun 17

Ah, the sound of this week is just lovely. Time with friends, a free (inspiring?) workshop, sunny weather – I like it all. And generally knowing that you’re still making sure to soothe your soul despite the crazy business that is your life as you gave us an insight in your post the other week. That post really had me worry about you for a bit. Don’t stretch yourself too thin, lady!
Your friend is very lucky to have you close by and ready to be there for support, no matter how busy you are. I hope he/she will feel better again soon.
Video/audio editing is very far up on top of my journalism-related hate list. It was then and there during my studies that I knew for 100 % sure TV or radio work wasn’t for me. The tiny muggy editing rooms didn’t help. I think I dislike it as much as you do shopping ;).

    • Cora | 15th Jun 17

Well you just stick to the journalism that soothe your soul and leave the TV radio work to those who like muggy editing rooms. ‘Cause apparently there are people…
No week is too busy to not get in any soul soothing. That’s the only way I get through them. I absolutely must have an almost equal balance.

  18. Kaylee | 23rd Jun 17

I was waiting for a scone picture… I swear you’re doing this to torture me!
The dress looks good and I’m sure it looks even better on you. ?
Taking time for breakfasts and are showing up for your friend (even if she was hurting) are great ways to soothe one’s soul. The breakfast thing is something I want to work on too. Just sitting with my thoughts and food seems peaceful. But alas easier said than done.
