Week In Review: The Superwoman Moving Edition

Well helloooooo

Yes… yes. I am, indeed, writing to you from my new home! My new kitchen! My new little hippy antique nest that I, dare say, is even starting to feel really quite livable

This was, not surprisingly, a mammoth of a week. I really, really appreciated all of your comments on my last post in regards to – no matter the amount of organizing and pre-planning you do before a move, the moving process always ends up being a stressful mess. And there is ALWAYS more stuff to pack right at the end! Thank you for making me feel less alone in this. But geez!! How does that happen!?

So without further ado, I’m doing a hella link up with Meg for this superwoman edition of Week In Review. Dan is still working full time in Guelph, so I was on my own all week to start on all the unpacking. And I did. All on my own. Hence, I am titling myself superwoman. Dan…. I’ve got this.

This week I…

Finished packing up all the remaining bits and pieces of my old place, lugged three massive garbage bags over to a dumpster, carried a futon frame over to a dispensing area, swept, cleaned the bathtub, and said my fond farewell to my little home

Over the span of three days, made countless mini-van trips between the two places with Dan – the two of us carrying countless boxes and bags and pieces of furniture into the apartment

Boxes boxes boxes…

Ate a lot of take out. At weird times. Standing, sitting, in a van, running out the door… but also discovered the best falafel I’ve ever had. Score.

First dinner in the apartment! My level of romance.

Unpacked and organized our new kitchen. Side note: does anyone else find organizing a kitchen THE hardest part about moving!?! It’s so hard!! I swear I stood in the middle of my kitchen in plain overwhelmed stillness for 5 solid minutes on more than one occasion.

Bought a new coffee press and finally found a butter dish!

Emptied out one fridge and then cleaned and starting refilling another

superwoman moving edition fridge

….more pizza…

Set up our TV, wiped down all our cupboards and drawers and organized our cleaning cabinets

Ate breakfast out at cafes for the first three days mostly because a) I had no internet for the majority of the week but also b) no groceries c) no table and d) where is my underwear?

Morning with Dan at Bloomers. Mmm bagel.

But then finally enjoyed my very first morning in the new abode!

Picked up and set up our internet all on my own. Coming from a complete non-techy this was a big deal.

Oh hi there little guy

Built a shoe rack… all on my own.

Spent way too much time, as well as my entire life’s savings last paycheck at Wal-mart picking up different sizes of organizers, bedding and other home necessities. Then lugged it all home on my own, looking like a crazy bag lady.

Spoke with countless potential candidates to come take a few VERY ANNOYING pieces of furniture from out of the house. Which involved a lot, a lot of emailing. Pieces that are putting a major kink in the last bit of unpacking. Hopefully having them all out by Monday!

Speaking of furniture…

Dealt with…… this

superwoman moving edition couch

Um…….. Yeah. It was traumatizing. Let’s just leave it at that.

Somehow squeezed in an audition (which felt good) and sent off a late night self tape

Also amidst all the mess, still spent 5 days at rehearsal and worked 3 shifts at work

Drank a lot of coffee.

superwoman moving edition coffee

… hey. Superwoman can have her vice.

I tried to keep up to date with some blog reading and responding to comments, but that definitely took a back seat. Thanks for all still being there!

In conclusion… I moved a lot of boxes. Unpacked a lot of boxes. Cleaned. Organized a lot of shelves. And tried to hold on to my big girl panties (which I eventually found) in an effort to remain sane and continue on with life.

Tell me,

What do you think is the hardest part of unpacking? What do you think is the hardest room to organize?

If you could have any breakfast you chose to celebrate your first morning in a new house, what would it be?

I’m weird: I love packing for a move and going through all my crap and culling the fat. I HATE MOVING AND UNPACKING. HATE. I have no clue where to put things. Alex is amazing at it. Case in point:
I handled the packing of our old apartment. All Alex did was pack his personal stuff. He was working full time.
When we moved to our current apartment, we were COMPLETELY unpacked with art on the walls in 48 hours start to finish. Keep in mind that I was having panic attacks and couldn’t do much because I was having a flair in my SI Joint.
I do love to build things, though, and Alex can’t handle that. It’s all #balance, right?

Geez louisseee. We haven’t even touched the art for our walls. Unpacking has a really nice idea behind it, but yeah, I definitely reach a point – pretty early on – where I’m like, okay no more. And take a month or two long break…

  2. Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy | 6th Nov 17

So impressed at everything you did this week, girl power, ALL while still working and auditioning. Bravo. And who could blame you for cafe breakfasts and some internet, I’d be doing the same thing. I bet it finally felt great to eat in your own kitchen though. I can’t wait to see more pictures!

Both the cafe breakfasts and then the eventual breakfast at home felt equally glorious. Those few minutes of internet time and reprieve sure did mean a lot in that crazy week though.

  3. Alyssa | 6th Nov 17

unpacking is tough! i’d agree and say the kitchen is def a challenge to organize. or for me, my closet lol. if I were you, my celebratory breakfast would be a fresh bagel with cream cheese and a latte πŸ™‚

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Fresh bagel with cream cheese? Done!! That was my choice too πŸ™‚

Yes, I still have to tackle the clothes. So the closet is going to be a whole other challenge of its own. Ugh.

  4. Juli@1000lovelythings | 6th Nov 17

Aaaaah awesome! Glad everything went smoothly (sort of)! Even though the couch situation reminds me an aweful lot of the Friends episode where Ross make everyone pivot to fir the new couch up the stairs ;-P
Also I hope that the superhero association has already send off your badge because this was hell of a busy and productive week!
Hope you guys make yourself home quickly! Unpacking definitely sucks but especially with the kitchen, if it turns out that how you organized everything isn’t practical, you can always rearrange! I did that with the kitchen as well.

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Oh there was a LOT of Ross pivoting!! I seriously can’t believe we got it in.

I’m definitely telling myself that this is how things are arranged for right now, but that they can – and should – change as the time goes on and I can always try something new.

  5. Hagar Bar | 6th Nov 17

    Hey Cora,
First of all, I want to admit I’m a follower of yours for more than a year now, and till now I didn’t find the “powers” to write you a comment more often, unfortunately. You see? English is not my main language and I’m afraid to make a lot of mistakes and being misunderstood, and in this situation it’s not different, but it’s very important for me anyway to try and write for you some words, so if there are a lot of mistakes i’m sorry for that haha:-)
anyway, back to you, I want to wish you a lot of good moments in your new appartment, with fresh start!
    Now for your questions:
    1) In my opinion, the worse erea to unpack is the closet, but it’s just me…
    2) Personally, I believe that the best morning meal in a new place is a bunch of pancakes, but it’s also a big no no for me in that period of my life as I’m dealing with an intensive ED, so maybe a good bowl of oatmeal with berriess and jam?

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Hagar! Hello! Thank you SO much for commenting. Please don’t let any language barrier keep you away – you are completely understandable and I really appreciate you saying hi.

Pancakes sound soooooo good. Maybe you can find a recipe that looks extra good to you and plan one day to make them for yourself and a friend or family? I think that sounds like a delicious challenge. And one that I would love to join you in.

  6. danielle | 6th Nov 17

oh wow! congratulations are definitely in order because you have survived!!!! that’s huge. moving and the unpacking process are so insane on many levels. i prefer that to packing though, i’d much rather unpack than pack. i love the act of building my nest and creating my new space. i love making myself at home. it’s very special and important. having the help of another person is nice, too!
i think my favorite first breakfast is either tex-mex diner food, or traditional diner food. i love diners!!! coffee and pancakes oh my πŸ™‚

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

I think my problem with unpacking is that I get impatient and just want things away so I zoom past all the fun of it just to get it “done.” Or, I have fun for the first 2 boxes and then say… okay… that’s it. And don’t start again for a few months. That seems to be the case as it is currently…

Mmmm can we please go on a diner date one day? Pancakes and coffee yes please.

  7. Ellie Pell | 6th Nov 17

Welcome home Cora πŸ™‚ I want to hear the futon story haha. Getting tons of shit at Walmart is all part of the glory of moving in, it’s like a rite of passage: embrace the bag lady!
The hardest part for me moving in is decorating. I simply want to just live somewhere and have it supply my basic necessities, that’s really it. I know I don’t sound like a proper female, but I’m just not into making my house a home. I wanna sleep, eat and read there =P Can I live vicariously through you instead?

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Haha! The way mart rite of passage – so true!! Gotta get all those cheap home gear! I like to decorate, but so far I haven’t even come close. That’ll probably be a job a couple months down the line… I seem to tire out of unpacking quite quickly.

  8. chasetheredgrape | 6th Nov 17

Congratulations on your new home! And one big hell yeah for a new coffee press! I’m presuming this is the bigger one you wanted to buy?!
I am such an organiser, I literally look at spaces and know where things fit best etc. It’s a weird skill to have but I’m proud of it! Ha! But I also know I am a oddity in this world… david doesn’t know how I do it! I think it’s in the genes… My dad is in logistics!
But you will get there and slowly all the boxes will be unpacked and everything will find its own wee home. Such an exciting time setting up your own new cosy space.. And always so special to be sharing it with someone else. πŸ™‚

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Yes, yes it is the bigger one that I had planned to buy. Are you surprised that it was the first thing I bought – on our first actual moving day? Aha. Priorities.

Dang I would totally hire you and that special skill of yours to come and have a look at my cupboards. Slowly though… things are getting there.

  9. Misti | 7th Nov 17

I second the Superwoman claim: you totally earned it! It’s so exciting to moving into a new place. I much prefer to unpack than to pack, but I don’t have a method to it…more a random flailing at boxes. Good luck getting settled in. And a good falafel is always a plus!

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Random flailing of boxes sounds about right!! Especially in that last day of packing and moving. Geez louise organization just went right out the window.

  10. Kaylee | 7th Nov 17

WOO you go Superwoman you!! That is quite the feat. Definitely agree with you that the kitchen is the toughest one. Even more difficult when you like to cook a lot I think since you’re trying to be efficient there too. And seriously, getting the Internet set up?!! All the brownie points (and brownies!) to you!!!

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

That’s the problem! I cook/bake a lot and so I want and CARE that the kitchen is well set up. Someone who doesn’t really cook wouldn’t care as much, I presume. Doesn’t help that I am a hoarder of food stuff…… poor dan.

  11. Emily Swanson | 7th Nov 17

Packing is so bittersweet. I think the hardest part of unpacking is probably the kitchen because there are so many components and dishes! But I love that sense of relief when it starts to come together. πŸ™‚

Ahh when you finally find that spot where everything feels like they are in their rightful place….. that’s such a blissful feeling. Just gotta have patience and keep trying until it feels right.

  12. Nicole @ bento momentos | 7th Nov 17

Wow, you sure have been busy! I hate carrying the heavy boxes lol. I guess it doubles as a workout though. πŸ™‚

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

You sure get your work in when moving!

  13. Kat | 7th Nov 17

Yay for moving!! Glad you are getting settled into your new place πŸ™‚
My least favorite part of unpacking is definitely the decoration stuff because that is normally the last stuff to go up. That being said, it normally sits in the box until I figure out exactly where I want it all to go in my new place and I’m SUPER indecisive, so it takes forever! Seriously I think I still have a box filled with stuff from when we moved two years ago because I’m so indecisive.

Yep. The way things are looking right now… the piles of my pictures and artwork will be the absolutely last things to be figured out. So… a few months from now….

  14. Joyce @ The Hungry Caterpillar | 7th Nov 17

Woot woot! You are superwoman! Like, seriously. You moved yourself and still had five days of rehearsals and three days of work!? And set up the internet by yourself?!
Enjoy staying in your new little home. I love that you love it so much.
I think one of the harder parts of unpacking is knowing what to do with all the storage containers, bags, boxes, wrapping materials, etc. I hate to throw them away, since they’re so super-useful, but I’ve never lived in an apartment or house with a particularly good place to put them.

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Oh my gosh you ARE SO RIGHT! That is totally the hardest part and one that I/we never think about. I don’t want to get rid of the good storage containers etc, but where the hell do you put them if you don’t have a huge house with a big old basement for storage. Ugh!

  15. Hannah | 8th Nov 17

Organizing a kitchen is SO hard. I kinda want to reorganize mine because quite a few things ended up in illogical places…but also I really don’t want to reorganize it because ugh, so hard. And, no matter how great a kitchen is otherwise, the cabinets will never be optimally configured.

    • Cora | 10th Nov 17

Haha. Cabinets are just not efficient. I mean who actually remembers to use whatever you put at the back? You use what you see when you open the doors… but then there’s a whole bunch of space at the back still to use….

  16. Kristy from Southern In Law | 9th Nov 17

    Way to go, moving queen!!

Moving and organising is no joke – and so exhausting! And you did all that on top of work and rehearsals? Superwoman!

  17. Miss Polkadot | 11th Nov 17

Not that there had ever been any doubt regarding this for me [which you’ll know from previous comments] but heck yes does this prove you’re Superwoman. I can’t even wrap my head around all you managed to get done. No words, really. Or maybe too many and I’m trying – emphasis on “trying” – to keep my comments shorter so I won’t go into everything that made me think “wow!!!” throughout this post. I know you were/are (?) a smidgen worried about Dan’s impression of you changing once living together. Really, though? You’re off to the best start after this date week. I mean it.
It baffles me that amidst all of the moving hurdles, you still pursued your job and auditioned. Like: where can I learn that kind of magic??
On a final note, I despise moving in its whole because I’m the least organized person but agree that the kitchen is the worst part. Truth be told, most of my own kitchen stuff is still in the attic because there’s just not enough space.

  18. Casey the College Celiac | 11th Nov 17

Congrats girl! I’ve moved my fair share of times (10 or 11, I think, from my dad’s military service to my own college and grad school moves) and organizing the kitchen is always a BEAST of a challenge. It sounds like you did an awesome job of handling all of the quirks and surprises of moving!
