Day In the Life (WIAW)

Rather than calling it “current lack of creativity,” let’s call it “jumping in on the fun!” shall we? Let’s look into a (tues)day in the life at a Theatre Training Conservatory. Centering around meals, obviously. WIAW style.

Thanks Jenn, Laura and Arman for letting “the show go on.”

5:40 Radio alarm sounds. CBC radio 2.

5:50 Phone alarm sounds. Not so nice. Press snooze on both. Turn over and go back to sleep.

6:30 Gradually come to and realize both alarms have been playing for 20 minutes. “Ah ****.” Get out of bed. Go to publish recipe post, realize my last edit didn’t save. “It’s going to be one of those days isn’t it?” Re-edit post and hit publish.

7 :00:  Wash face, brush teeth, get dressed, clean up/put away dishes, 20 minutes of stretching/yoga.

7:45: Make decaf coffee, plate breakfast (of my new freshly baked muffins), find a last minute monologue I forgot about, sit and eat while reading emails and blogs.

8:45: Throw lunch and scripts into bag, jump onto bike, head to theatre.

muffin pear peanut butter day in the life

Two of my “best banana muffins” + bosc pear + drizzles of peanut butter

Check out yesterday’s post for my muffin recipe!

9-10: Voice coaching. Warm ups/breathe work/singing/rehearse text.

10-11: Meet partner to rehearse a song for an upcoming showcase. Realize only 15 minutes in that, “it ain’t happening.” (letting go of expectations, right?).  Feeling super off so stay in studio to do some breathing and grounding exercises on my own. ” …Much better.

11:20-12:20: Movement work. Today we focused on releasing the jaw (see? I ain’t lying). Ho boy do I need to do more of this. That thing was solid as a rock

12:30: Lunch break

Get lunch from fridge and find my usual spot in our cafe.

lunch salad day in the life

Leftovers mixed into a salad of spinach + kale + lentils + quinoa + nuts + sweet potato + cherry tomatoes + a smokey/sweet tahini maple dressing

12:50: Putz on laptop and warm up by fireplace while replying to the lovely comments from Monday’s WIR post.

apple by fire day in the life

Decaf tea + apple

1:30-5:30: Mask Rehearsal. Played around with these silly fellas for 4 hours. Its harder than you’d think.

larva masks day in the life

Look at that face…

5:30: Early end to the day (rare!). Bike to grocery store to get a few ingredients for last minute dinner decision.

6:00: Arrive home, throw all my gear onto the floor and begin peeling potatoes before my coat is even off. I’m a tad excited.

Make Meg’s Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes, following her recipe exactly except for halfing the red pepper flakes (my wimpy tastebuds).  This was my first attempt at making scalloped potatoes (#tatervirgin). I never got a traditional Easter dinner on the weekend, and darn tootin’ I was determined to have one.

scalloped potatoes day in the life

Cheeeeeessssee. Plus, Meg’s spice mix is brilliant.

6:30: Take off coat, put away notes, lunch dishes and groceries. Clean up mess. Make rest of dinner while potatoes are cooking.

7:30: Dinner. Sit down, dig in, salivate. It’s been way too long since I’ve delved into a good load of cheesy potatoes. Think, “real foooood” as I try to pace myself.

Those little crispy bits… swoon.

8:00:  Digest while blog reading. Throw together a bread pudding to make use of old banana bread. Wash dishes, wipe counters, put together lunch for tomorrow, quick shower.

8:50: Take out bread pudding. Put on PJS, boil kettle for tea, plate evening snack. Plunk down on couch with heat pad. Nibble and sip away while writing this post.

Get totally shocked when I realize jelly bean flavors are actually in accordance to their color?! Since when is green mint? And yellow is lemon? Obviously I hadn’t had jelly beans in over a decade.

Easter Snack Plate. Cookie dough filled Easter Bunny + Jelly Beans

10:30: Finish post. Realize I still need to learn a Shakespearean sonnet for tomorrow. “Ah ****.”

Funny how days end just how they began…

11:50: Eyes are closing. Wash face, brush teeth,  jump into bed. Gonezo

It’s been very strange now that my days have slowed down and I’m actually not at my studio until 10 pm every night.  I’d call this a pretty dull day, but a nice day with a good balance of my two passions: theatre and good food.

Just a little peak into my little life for ya. Have a wonderful week you foodies!

Tell me,

Do you ever start making dinner before even taking off your coat?

Jelly Bean fan? (I’m not sure about those green ones…)

Do you ever say “darn tootin?” Who the heck made that one up…

  1. Kate | 30th Mar 16

Say what?! Are we actually that in sync? I did a day in the life too!
Aren’t those potatoes just amazing?? I made them for our Valentine’s Day dinner and they were the star of the show! Your muffins look ultra fluffy too.
I wish I could bike to school! If I was braver I probably would, but I don’t trust drivers or myself. Plus my bookbag usually weighs 59 lb. I bet your facing super cold temps too- you super woman!

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

They were so good – I loved the teeny bit of spice and flavor combination. And obviously the cheese.
Aha! Definitely hear you on the backpack. People usually think I’m traveling for days with the load I carry around – I don’t know how it always happens. I have to assure them “nope – just a few hours.”

  2. Stephanie Leduc | 30th Mar 16

Ah it’s so funny my wiaw post has some jelly beans in it too (no picture though I forgot weh). Ok so that bunny is filled with cookie dough?? I think I might need to try that haha. It’s crazy how early you woke up and only left at 8:45, I usually wake up 30 minutes before leaving because I can not stand wasting a precious moment of sleep! I obviously don’t have a relaxing morning like you seem to be having, that is for sure. Crazy how different routines can be though!

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

I would have rather had your jelly bellys then these guys – you had much cooler flavors!
The bunny was a random find and it was pure amazing. I’m really hoping it wasn’t just a limited offer.
I know – my morning routine has become rather indulgent over the years. I find I need 2 hours before able to leave!! I’m nuts.

  3. chasetheredgrape | 30th Mar 16

Haha I have defintiely used the phrase darn tootin! I think it should be used more often as it makes me giggle! πŸ™‚
I often get things cooking as soon as I get in the door. David’s often yelling at me to get my shoes off or at least take my handbag off, which is usually still over my shoulder!
    And I can’t remember the last time I had a jelly bean…

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

Haha!!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one who knows their priorities when they come through the door. Though I have no one to remind me I still have my bike helmet on when I finally sit down to eat..
Darn Tootin. I just have no idea where that came from. But I’m keeping it πŸ™‚

  4. snackiebird | 30th Mar 16

Yep, sometimes I am too excited for food and start making dinner with coat on me. Girl just wanna have her dinner. Also, that cheesy potatoes looks amazing I wish I had oven for making it;)

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

A girl DOES just want her dinner! My thoughts exactly πŸ™‚

  5. SuzLyfe | 30th Mar 16

Jelly beans are my spirit animal.
I like how you are like I’m going to go home and cook something amazing for myself. Right now, if I have a semi composed plate, it is a win.
And omg I want your breakfast.

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

So you win for best spirit animal.
Believe me – I was so excited about this because I NEVER go home and actually make something – from scratch – for myself. Its always leftovers thrown into a bowl, using up whatever I have. So this felt like pure luxury – almost like I was a real adult or something.

  6. Aubrey @ Clusterforked | 30th Mar 16

I LOVE these day in the life posts. Working in theatre is one of those jobs that I just know in my heart I could never do so my hat goes off to you! Having gone to performing arts school I’ve seen first hand how much work it can be. For leftovers your lunch looks simply divine! Funnily enough I was actually eating jelly beans as I read this post.

Oh yes the world of theatre is NOT for everyone. We’re always told, “If you could be happy doing anything else – do it instead.” So thanks for the “hat!”
Everyone seems to be on a jelly bean kick right now… weird spring omens.

  7. Sarah @ Bucket List Tummy | 30th Mar 16

I am loving these food photos – so colorful! I want your breakfast with that drizzled PB! And your lunch bowl – mix of everything I love. That bunny is filled with cookie dough!?

You would have loved my lunch mash up – I was just sadly missing tempeh.
That bunny…. yes. Yes it absolutely was.

  8. Morgan @ Morgan Manages Mommyhood | 30th Mar 16

I love day in the life posts! So interesting to see people’s days. I LOVE jellybeans, but only the Starburst ones. Like, I’ll eat the whole bag in 1 day. Thankfully, the green is green apple.

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

Oh Starbust jellybeans would have been waaaaay better. I wanted to remember what the original ones were like – but now I know I’d rather stick to the more contemporary varieties.

  9. Heather @ Polyglot Jot | 30th Mar 16

Im usually making a snack right when i walk in the door after work and make dinner later on after i work out. But, I practically run from my door to the kitchen for that snack! Darn tootin is awesome…maybe I should use it more hahaha

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

I’m thankful my front door goes right into the kitchen – less running and less time wasted before that snack!
Darn Tootin. We can start a new lingo wave.

  10. Heather@hungryforbalance | 30th Mar 16

I haven’t had a jelly bean in YEARS!! But, I desperately want some of that cookie dough stuffed chocolate bunny!
Those masks are cool, but I bet they are challenging to work with!
    Those scalloped potatoes looks amazing!

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

That bunny was real good – and I’m not even usually a cookie dough fan (gasp!). I really hope it wasn’t just a limited time offer. Those masks are hard to play correctly, but soooo cool when done right.

  11. Emily Swanson | 30th Mar 16

Wow girl, you get up so early! I don’t think I could survive on that sort of a schedule, but my respect for someone who has the strength to do that is immense. πŸ™‚ I’m thankful that God does give me the grace for everyday. And I absolutely love all of your delicious looking eats.

I do get up early! I love my mornings, but I’d like to work on sleeping in a bit more when I don’t HAVE to be up. A work in progress..

  12. katalysthealth | 30th Mar 16

Oh my gosh your fooooood! That salad is to die for, seriously. And that Easter snack plate? A cookie dough filled easter bunny – say whaaaaat! I need to find me one of those suckers STAT!

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

It was a gold mine find – I’ll let the world know if I can find more!

  13. Dani @ Dani California Cooks | 30th Mar 16

Sometimes I start dinner before I do anything else when I get home! Especially if part of the recipe calls for like roasting something for a long time or boiling rice – I want to get it started!

Exxxxactly. If I know its going to take longer than 15 minutes to make – it gets started ASAP.

  14. Lyss | 30th Mar 16

Cookie dough easter bunny?! i need that in my life ASAP! Also, those muffins look delicious as well as all your meals! I am not the biggest fan of jelly beans- I am definitely more of a chocolate person! Have a great day girl!

I’m SO with you – I’m not a candy person at all, I just had a weird craving to see what the jelly beans lovers were all about. But over and above all chocolate wins every day. Even more now that I’ve tried “the other side.”

  15. gracefulcoffee | 31st Mar 16

  16. Ellie | 31st Mar 16

Sometimes when I only have a half hour before I have to work, I turn on the oven to roast nuts, throw in the nuts, jump in the shower, get out of the shower, take nuts out, make nut butter in my skivvies, dress for work and leave my house =P I’ve got it down to a science!
I don’t care for jelly beans, so mint sounds terrible! Its so funny to say “these taste like the color!” Bahahaha

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

You will MAKE nut butter in the morning before work!? Oh my god girl you are super woman. I only do that on weekends when I have all the time in the world. Though the most amazing part about all of this is that you said “skivvies.” What a fabulous picture you just gave me πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€
      Colours have tastes, don’t they?

  17. Meghan@CleanEatsFastFeets | 31st Mar 16

And now I want cheddar scalloped potatoes. I love those bad boys and grew up with them so I have fond memories. Over the years, I’ve taken my mother’s basic recipe and gave it my own unique twist. I’m so glad you made them and even better, enjoyed them.

Day in the life posts are fun. I like seeing into your world of theater. It’s so unlike my own; I get a kick out of it. And who knows why my life will look like in just a few short weeks. It’s going to be completely different.

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

I truly loved the potatoes and they were really good for me to make.
This day was rather tame, but many days in the theatre world can often have quite a “kick,” if you will.
Your days will most definitely be something different coming up real soon! A very, very exciting different. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

  18. cookiesnchem | 31st Mar 16

Your day starts pretty early! Mornings are my favourite time of the day as well. πŸ™‚ When I come home late-ish, I always start making dinner ASAP, whether that’s preheating the oven while I put my things away or rinsing veggies while I talk to my family on the phone.
And… oh my goodness – can you believe I’ve never eaten jelly beans before?! Your scalloped potatoes look amazing, by the way. Did you make that smoky maple tahini dressing from scratch?
cookiesnchem recently posted…You Know You’re Lazy When…My Profile

    • Cora | 31st Mar 16

Yes – too early some days – though I really relish my morning time. It’s when I’m most productive.
Multitasking becomes paramount when it comes to getting home late and needing to put food on the table.
I’d say “go get yourself some jelly beans” but you really aren’t missing much. Maybe try one or two when you get a chance – but then you’ll be safe sticking to whatever candy you do like.
The dressing was leftover from a meal I got at a restaurant on the weekend – its my favorite so I always get extra to go. I’m still trying to get down the recipe!

  19. Joyce @ The Hungry Caterpillar | 31st Mar 16

I start making dinner before I start taking off my coat all the time–so hungry!
I never really liked jelly beans; maybe it was the texture.
Those masks are so cute! Did you make those? Or were you wearing one?
Joyce @ The Hungry Caterpillar recently posted…Thinking Out Loud: Irony or Hypocrisy? My Profile

    • Cora | 1st Apr 16

I did not make these ones – these are the real deal – so we were just wearing them. I have made my own before…. I felt like a kindergartner playing with play-doh for the first time. Didn’t quite have the same professional results…
Jelly beans totally had a weird texture.

  20. sprint2thetable | 1st Apr 16

Random story: I am not a jelly bean fan, but my litter sister was a Jelly Belly junkie when we were kids. SO… when she was being potty trained my mom used to reward her for going #2 with Jelly Bellies. To this day I can’t see them without thinking of poo. LOL!
